I love video games. Here are a few of my favorites.
Mega Man
I instantly fell in love with Mega Man's gimmick of selecting the order of your stages and stealing your enemy's power. I had never seen these ideas before. Since then, Mega Man has become an icon of platformers. It also has a extremely underappreciated narrative.
Armored Core
The pinnacle of mech simulators. This is a From Software series (creators of the Souls games) that took over the mantle of the Mechwarrior games to deliver a series that explores both "real robots" and "super robots". With tons of options in parts, configurations, and designs, if you like mechs and you like Demons Souls, you probably can't go wrong with Armored Core.
Front Mission
A wonderful tactical RPG full of robots you customize and kit-out. Can be tough as nails but can also really force you to think about your tactics and load-outs. I own the entire series.
Valkyrie Profile
A beautiful JRPG with a dour tone and muted colors. The first two games are incredibly innovative even to this day. The series reinvented itself twice over with follow-ups: once with a tactical RPG and again with an action game.
Sakura Wars
A brilliant multi-genre game centered around tactical battles and a presentation styled like a weekly cartoon.
Tri-ace
Tri-ace is an RPG developer and is probably my favorite JRPG developer on the planet. They are the creator of the aforementioned Valkyrie Profile. Their games consistently offer innovative mechanics which really put the gameplay front and center.
Romance of the Three Kingdoms
Crusader Kings before there was Crusader Kings. Romance of the Three Kingdoms is a long-running strategy series about forging and maintaining relationships while also trying to unify China. Compared to Paradox games, I would call this series a nice middle-weight strategy game.
Xeno
The Xeno series is right up my alley. A series of epics revolving around the nature of God, the will to power, and the meaning of life...along with giant robots and sci-fi. The mechanics and aesthetics of Xenogears makes it one of my very favorite JRPGs of all time.
Dragon Quest
There's something about this series of JRPGs that have elected to stay largely the same title after title in terms of game mechanics. It's charming, it's hopeful, and that anthem is perfect.
Ultima
If Final Fantasy is the grandfather of JRPGs then Ultima is the grandfather of CRPGs in general. A nine chapter saga (along with a few side stories) of the Avatar as he travels through Britannia. Every game shakes things up drastically. Quest of the Avatar was brilliant for having no other goal than, "go be a good person."
Final Fantasy
There's not much to be said about the grandfather of JRPGs. Nearly every game brings with it new mechanics and a new world to explore. Some of my favorites are Final Fantasy X, Final Fantasy VIII, Final Fantasy VII, and Final Fantasy VI.
Paradox Grand Strategy Games
Modern military doctrine recognizes three main categories of decision-making: strategic, operational, and tactical. However, many consider there to be a fourth, grand strategic, and Paradox is the clear champion of games with that level of decision-making. Crusader Kings III, Hearts of Iron IV, Europa Universalis IV, Imperator: Rome, and Victoria II are all brilliant titles that will steal away your time.
Other Games
Here are a handful of other games and game-related things I have in my collection.
